There’s something undeniably satisfying about a perfectly executed Currywurst, that iconic Berlin street food. And whenever we’re wandering around Hackescher Markt and a hunger pang strikes, Currywurst 61 is our go-to spot.

For the uninitiated, Currywurst is a symphony in simplicity: a juicy pork sausage (usually bratwurst) sliced into bite-sized pieces, smothered in a rich, curry-infused ketchup sauce, and served with a side of crispy fries (pommes frites). It’s a dish steeped in history, with both Berlin and the Ruhr area claiming its origin. But wherever it came from, there’s no denying its status as a German street food legend.

Currywurst 61 delivers a classic rendition of this beloved dish. We opted for the traditional bratwurst with skin, and it was cooked to juicy perfection. The curry ketchup sauce struck a perfect balance between sweet and savory, with a subtle kick of curry spice that lingered pleasantly on the palate. While we skipped the fries on this visit (we may have overindulged in pastries earlier!), we know from past experience that they’re crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside – the ideal foil for scooping up every last bit of that delicious sauce.

There’s often a line snaking outside Currywurst 61, but that’s in our opinion usually a good sign – it means fresh, hot food! Plus, the wait is rarely too long. We’ve even been known to double down and order two portions (hey, don’t judge!), just to experience the different sausage options – they even offer a vegan sausage option for those who prefer a plant-based alternative!

While some might find the sauce a touch on the sweet side or the spice level a bit mild, for us, Currywurst 61 hits the spot perfectly. It’s a delicious and authentic reminder of why Currywurst remains a Berlin staple.
