Takumi NINE Tonkotsu Ramen

Our Ratings:
★★★★☆ 4/5

Food we ordered:

  • Tonkotsu Ramen
  • Special Tonkotsu Ramen
  • Karaage (Japanese fried chicken)
  • Gyoza

Takumi NINE Tonkotsu is a relatively new addition to Berlin’s ramen restaurant scene, joining the existing Takumi Nine locations across the city and beyond. As the name suggests, this ramen shop focuses entirely on Tonkotsu ramen, a style known for its flavorful pork bone broth.

Authenticity with Room for Improvement

We found the ramen at Takumi Tonkotsu to be decent and authentically Japanese. For Berliners with a hankering for genuine Japanese ramen, this is a welcome option, especially considering the scarcity of truly traditional ramen spots in the city. However, compared to some of the incredible ramen experiences we’ve had in Dusseldorf or even further afield in Asia, Takumi Tonkotsu doesn’t quite reach the same level.

Diving into the Broth:

We opted for a classic Tonkotsu ramen and their “Special Tonkotsu” for a more loaded experience. The special version truly lives up to its name, overflowing with an array of toppings like Cha Shu pork, shrimp, karaage (Japanese fried chicken), and a perfectly seasoned egg. The flavor profile was good, but we felt the broth could have been a bit richer, that deep, umami bomb that truly defines Tonkotsu ramen.

Stellar Gyoza and Karaage:

We also branched out and tried some of their gyoza (dumplings) and karaage as side dishes. Both dishes delivered exactly what we were hoping for. The gyoza particularly impressed us with its thin, delicate dumpling skin and well-seasoned filling.

The Final Verdict: A Reliable Ramen Option

Overall, Takumi Tonkotsu serves up a decent bowl of Tonkotsu ramen that satisfies a craving for authentic Japanese flavors. While it might not be the most mind-blowing ramen experience you’ll ever have, it’s a solid choice when that ramen hankering hits. We wouldn’t hesitate to return for another bowl in the future.
