Hofbräu Wirtshaus

Hofbräu Wirtshaus

Hofbräu is a Bavarian brewery which provides a Oktoberfest mood and feeling all around the year. Hofbräu Wirtshaus has 2 branches in Hamburg, both are very close to the city center. If you are visiting Hamburg/Germany, it is a very convenient location to taste some typical German/Bavarian food to complete your German experience during your visit.

Our family came and visited us when we were there, that’s why we ordered quite a few dishes. The portion of the food is HUGE! Especially for the pork knuckle, it’s really crispy for the skin, and it’s super delicious, but the portion was too much for 1 person – and luckily, we only ordered a half portion… It served as the traditional Bavarian version with potato dumplings, which to be honest we were too full to finish, and we didn’t really like it that much either.

Another dish that worth mentioning is the Gröstl knuckles with butter spätzle. Spätzle is a kind of pasta made with fresh egg and it’s a typical cuisine in southern Germany. If you would like to taste the pork knuckle but feel too overwhelming to deal with the whole knuckle, then you can try this dish instead. The meat from the pork knuckle is already cut, and it’s a dish with spätzle, mushroom, bacon, sunny egg and pickled cucumber.

Schnitzel is a giant thin steak coated with egg and breadcrumbs and deep fried. It’s very tasty but it’s not as special as the other two dishes. Chicken shank also tasted very good, but probably you can find this dish in many other places and not necessarily coming here to taste it. Food is a bit expensive, but everything comes in super big portion. There always seems not to have enough staff to work there. But overall it’s a nice German food experience.

Food we ordered:

  • Half Crispy Pork Knuckle
  • Chicken Shank with chips
  • Schnitzel
  • Gröstl knuckles with butter spätzle
